BRUNSWICK — The passing of an era is being felt in one of the many Memorial Day parades across Maine.

The Brunswick-Topsham parade features large numbers of sailors from Brunswick Naval Air Station for the last time. Sailors have been shipping out, and the base will close for good next year.

Navy Capt. Will Fitzgerald, the base commanding officer, says it’s not the end of a tradition because sailors “will continue to celebrate Memorial Day wherever we may be living.”

Redevelopment leaders hope to attract new businesses to help replace the roughly 6,500 jobs estimated to be lost as the Navy moves out in May 2011. Public hearings on a draft environmental impact statement on the reuse plan will be held on Wednesday and Thursday.
