YARMOUTH – Nick Whittaker hit a two-run homer in the third inning and struck out nine Wednesday to lead second-seeded Yarmouth to an 8-6 victory against seventh-ranked Gray-New Gloucester in a Western Class B baseball quarterfinal.

With Yarmouth (16-1) leading 5-4 in the fifth, Campbell Haley hit an RBI triple, then scored on a single by Dustin McCrossin.

Taylor Valente of Gray-New Gloucester (9-8) had two hits, including a two-run homer in the fifth.

LINCOLN ACADEMY 10, FALMOUTH 7: Chris Chickering’s two-run single in the fourth inning put third-ranked Lincoln Academy (12-5) ahead for good against sixth-ranked Falmouth (10-7) in a Western Class B quarterfinal at Newcastle.

The Yachtsmen took a 5-3 lead in the third on pitcher Ben Beaulieu’s three-run homer. Lincoln loaded the bases in the fourth on a leadoff single by Kyle Scherer, a double by Merritt Wotton and a walk to Steve Quinlan. Ben McLain then hit a two-run double.

Quinlan added a two-run triple in the fifth.

McLain was the winning pitcher for the Eagles. He gave up eight hits, walked three and struck out two.


NYA 12, LINCOLN ACADEMY 1: Phil Champoux had four goals and an assist as the fourth-seeded Panthers (6-7) downed the fifth-ranked Eagles (8-5) in an Eastern Class B quarterfinal at Yarmouth.

Tim Millett and Dylan Seely each added two goals and an assist, and Taylor Norton had 11 saves for NYA.

NYA will be at Yarmouth in the semifinals Saturday.

MESSALONSKEE 9, CHEVERUS 6: Andrew Wilson and Nate DelGiudice scored back to back in the second half to break a tie and help third-seeded Messalonskee (10-3) beat sixth-ranked Cheverus (6-7) in an Eastern Class A quarterfinal at Oakland.

The goals came after Cheverus rallied from a 5-2 deficit to tie it in the third quarter.

LEWISTON 3, DEERING 0: Sam Cloutier scored twice for the fifth-seeded Blue Devils (7-6) against the fourth-ranked Rams (7-6) in an Eastern Class A quarterfinal at Portland.

Chris Rancourt scored the third goal a minute into the second quarter.


KENNEBUNK 7, MASSABESIC 4: Molly Santori had three goals as the fourth-ranked Rams (9-4) held off fifth-seeded Massabesic (6-7) in a Western Class A quarterfinal at Kennebunk.

After Kennebunk took a 4-0 lead, Massabesic pulled within 4-3 by halftime.

CHEVERUS 5, PORTLAND 3: Sarah LaQuerre gave third-ranked Cheverus (8-5) a 4-1 lead with 14 minutes left and Katie Haley made 15 saves to help beat sixth-seeded Portland (7-6) in an Eastern Class A quarterfinal at Cheverus High.

The Stags held a 2-0 halftime lead on goals by Sage Witham and Brianna Amato. Katherine Flaherty then scored on a free position shot for the Bulldogs before Grace Fitzpatrick countered for Cheverus.
