A moose ran into Deering Oaks Park at 11 a.m. today.
After a large crowd gathered around the young bull, he crossed Forest Avenue under the I-295 overpass and made his way to a reedy area at the rear of Hannaford supermarket.
With several Portland police officers and state game wardens watching, a state biologist prepared to fire a tranquilizer gun to subdue the animal. The gun jammed, however, and the moose ran back across Forest Avenue and through the University of Southern Maine campus. It was next spotted behind Cheverus High School, before heading into Evergreen Cemetery off Stevens Avenue around 1 p.m.
Three police cars, the state biologists’ truck and a game warden’s truck followed the moose into the cemetery.
The moose eventually ran out the back of the wooded area of the cemetery, where the biologists let it go, heading in the direction of Westbrook.
