Jon Shardlow resigned his position as girls’ soccer coach at Falmouth High School after less than two seasons.

The resignation comes after Falmouth’s first loss of the season, 3-2 against rival Yarmouth on Saturday.

Athletic Director Todd Livingston said Shardlow believed he needed to resign in “the best interests of the program.” Jon Meek, an assistant coach, took over as interim head coach for Thursday’s game at Wells, a 7-0 win. Livingston would not comment on specific reasons for the resignation but did say Shardlow had the school’s support.

A message left on Shardlow’s cell phone and another sent to his e-mail address were not answered Thursday night.

Shardlow was twice named regional coach of the year by the National Soccer Coaches Association, most recently after the 2008 season when he coached the Waynflete girls to the Class C state title. He was hired by Falmouth last year and took the team to the Western Class B final, losing to York.

He coached at South Portland before moving to Waynflete.
