SOUTH PORTLAND — A ban on BB guns, slingshots and other nonlethal weapons in public places won final approval from the City Council on Monday.

Councilors voted 6-1 in favor of the amendment to the city’s weapons ordinance. Councilor Tom Blake was opposed to the proposal.

The prohibition applies to bows and arrows, BB guns, air guns, pellet guns, slingshots and other weapons that throw missiles of any kind. The ban makes exceptions when those weapons are being used for law-enforcement purposes, in self-defense, are being taken to or from authorized shooting galleries or are being transported in an enclosed container.

The change does not prohibit the use of nonlethal weapons on private property. It does not restrict the possession of firearms in public places.
