Maine State Police will likely release a statement today providing details about Saturday’s fatal shooting in Casco.

Richard “Jake” Jacobson, 47, died from a gunshot wound he suffered on Rattlesnake Mountain. State police Lt. James Luce said Monday that the incident is under investigation.

The shooting involved a juvenile and may have been accidental, Luce said. He declined to release further details.

An autopsy was done Sunday, but the results were not available Monday because of the Columbus Day holiday.

Jacobson, of 269 Lower Coffee Pond Road in Casco, owned and operated a construction business, RJ Builders in Windham.

He was the son of Theresa Carlos of Casco and left two young sons, Griffin and Grant. Attempts to reach the family Monday were unsuccessful.

Jacobson was remembered by friends Monday as a great father, who always made time for his children.

Mark Champagne of Westbrook said Jacobson and his older son, Griffin, stopped at his house around 1 p.m. Saturday. He said Jacobson told him he was going to practice target shooting behind his house, which is near the mountain.

Champagne said he didn’t know whether Jacobson took Griffin to the mountain.

He said Jacobson attended his son’s football practices and never missed a game.

“It’s really sad,” he said. “He was wicked close with his kids.”

Jacobson began his construction business after graduating from Westbrook High School in 1982. He built houses and did renovations and roofing work. He built more than 50 houses throughout southern Maine.

John Harriman of Westbrook, a close friend of Jacobson for 30 years, said he was shocked by the news of the shooting.

Harriman said Jacobson enjoyed hunting and owned several guns. He said Jacobson was extremely cautious with guns, especially around his children.

“He is very safe with his guns and I know he teaches his kids the same thing,” he said. “It must have been an accident.”

Michael Caron of Westbrook, another longtime friend, called the incident a tragedy.

“The guy loved his kids,” Caron said. “They were his life.”
