National Merit Program

High school students enter the National Merit program by taking the Preliminary SAT. About 16,000 students, representing less than 1 percent of U.S. high school students, qualify as semifinalists and will further compete for one of 2,500 National Merit $2,500 Scholarships.

Local semifinalists are:

Deering High School: Siena Butterfield, Sebastian Pinkham, Rebecca Silver and Sarah Varney.

Kennebunk High School: Rachel Magalski and William Records.

Portland High School: Lydia-Rose Kesich.
