PORTLAND— A report of a man jumping off the Martins Point Bridge this afternoon turned out to be unfounded.

Paul Conner, a spokesman for the U.S. Coast Guard station in South Portland, said an air and ground search for the man was suspended around 7 tonight.

Searchers could find no evidence of anyone in the water, and Conner said there were no reports of a missing person filed with authorities.

The Coast Guard said a motorist dialed 911 around 3:45 p.m. to report that a man wearing shorts jumped off a guardrail on the Portland side of the two-lane bridge.

The Route 1 bridge connects Portland with Falmouth.
