PORTLAND — The former home of the Portland Press Herald and Maine Sunday Telegram will be used again tonight by the Portland Fire Department for training purposes.

Deputy Fire Chief Robert Wassick said the seven-story structure at 390 Congress St. provides firefighters with the opportunity to train in a high-rise building.

Firefighters can practice hauling hose lines up several sets of stairs, staging ladders, and spraying water from upper story windows. It’s also convenient because the section of Market Street, next to Central Fire Station, can easily be blocked off. Most of the building’s interior is in the process of being demolished, which makes it ideal for training, Wassick said.

The training exercises, which have been taking place at night, will continue through the end of October.

The Portland Press Herald and Maine Sunday Telegram is now located at One City Center.
