TURNER  — Four schools in Maine are being recognized for excellence for providing healthy environments for their students.

Turner Elementary, Turner Primary, Leeds Central and Greene Central schools were being recognized by the U.S. Department of Agriculture during an awards ceremony today in Turner.

Those schools are the first in Maine to earn Silver awards in the USDA’s HealthierUS School Challenge, a program that encourages schools to create healthy environments by promoting nutritional excellence and physical activity.

Officials say only 841 schools out of 101,000 eligible schools nationwide have achieved HealthierUS status.
