PORTLAND — The Maine GOP is going after Wall Street financier S. Donald Sussman, accusing him of trying to buy the election for Democrats.
Maine Republican Party Vice Chairman Charlie Summers said today that Sussman has given nearly $1.7 million this year to groups that are helping Democratic candidates. And the GOP says the biggest beneficiary is his fiancee, Maine Democratic Rep. Chellie Pingree.
Summers says it’s Sussman’s right to spend as much money as he pleases, but he said it’s bad for Maine. Sussman wasn’t immediately available to respond.
Summers also raised accusations of hypocrisy. He says Pingree used to rail against the influence of money in politics, but has no qualms about Sussman’s money.
