According to unofficial results, incumbent Democrat Larry Bliss holds a mere 64-vote lead over Republican challenger Joe Palmieri to represent Senate District 7, which includes South Portland, Cape Elizabeth and part of Scarborough.

Bliss, who last month announced his intentions to run for party leadership should he be re-elected, garnered 9,142 votes to 9,078 for Palmieri, a local radio personality and restaurant owner.

Palmieri had his best showing in Scarborough, where he got 1,240 votes to Bliss’ 833. The support for Bliss in South Portland (5,663 votes) and Cape Elizabeth (2,646 votes) was a little too much for Palmieri to over come as he fell 317 votes short in South Portland and 154 votes short in Cape Elizabeth.

Despite falling short to Bliss in South Portland, Palmieri was able to best him in three of the city’s five polling locations, Districts 3 and District 4 at the South Portland Community Center and District 5 at the Red Bank Community Center.
