Ricetta’s to host latest round in its Next Best Pizza contest

Ricetta’s Brick Oven Pizzeria will narrow down the finalists for its Third Annual Maine’s Next Best Pizza contest from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight at the restaurant’s Falmouth location.

Nine finalists will be featured at a special dinner buffet tonight where customers can sample the pizzas and vote for their favorite. Then, on Nov. 10 from 5 to 8 p.m., the final two will go through a cook-off to determine the winner. Those pizzas will also be available for sampling in the buffet.

Dinner buffets both nights will be all-you-can-eat and cost $12.49 for adults or $6.49 for children under 12.

The winner will win $500, and the recipe will be included in Ricetta’s 2011 menu. For the next year, Ricetta’s will donate $1 to the Good Shepherd Food Bank for every large contest-winning pizza sold.

Ricetta’s Falmouth restaurant is in Falmouth Village at 240 U.S. Route 1.

Class and dinner feature cooking the Rwandan way

Learn about Rwandan cooking at a cooking class Friday at St. Pius X Church, 492 Ocean Ave.

The class starts at 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by a traditional Rwandan meal.

Buttermilk pumpkin cakes take grand prize in cook-off

Laurie Lufkin of Essex, Mass., won the $10,000 grand prize in Saturday’s New England Dairy Cook-Off sponsored by Hood.

Lufkin’s prize-winning recipe was New England Buttermilk Pumpkin Cakes with Sour Cream Apple Caramel and Dried Cranberries.

Mainer Jessie Grearson of Falmouth came in second with her Bombay-Style Crunch Fish Tostada Bites with Sriracha-Lime Sour Cream, and Mary Jo Fletcher LaRocco of North Kingstown, R.I., finished third with Turkey Scaloppine with Lemon-Thyme Cream Sauce over Cranberry Polenta.

The finalists received $500 each.

Wines of Spain, Portugal to be featured at Bar Lola

Bar Lola’s next fall wine dinner will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and feature the wines of Spain and Portugal. The dinner is $70 per person and includes a five-course dinner with wine pairings, tax and gratuity.

Inn By the Sea to host European Beer Dinner

Sea Glass Restaurant at the Inn By the Sea will hold a European Beer Dinner Nov. 11 at 6:30 p.m.

Chef Mitchell Kaldrovich will prepare four courses paired with European ales. Dishes will include Wheat Ale Braised Beef Stew with Smoked Noisette Potato, and Roasted Mushrooms and Bacon Crumbs paired with Witte Noire Imperial Amber Wheat Ale.
