PORTLAND – The Gorham boys soccer team came one game short in their quest for a state championship, falling 2-1 to Portland in the West regional final Wednesday night.

Gorham, the No. 4 seed in the Class A West field, finishes the season with an 11-4-2 record. The West champion Bulldogs will take on undefeated Bangor for the state championship on Saturday.

The two teams played to a scoreless tie in the first 40 minutes at Fitzpatrick Stadium. Coming out of the halftime break, the score remained knotted at 0-0 until the Bulldogs finally broke through with a Tony Yekeh goal with just over 30 minutes to go in the game.

The Rams made a comeback effort late in the game when Seth Wing scored with just over 1:40 showing on the scoreboard clock, making it 2-1. But the Rams were not able to break through again and the Bulldogs captured the West title and the berth in the state championship game.
