PORTLAND — Twenty-six Christmas tree ornaments from Maine are going to Washington, D.C.

Two professional artists and six high school students living on Peaks Island produced this year’s batch of ornaments that will be put on the Maine Christmas tree in President’s Park, near the White House. One of the ornaments will be selected to hang on the national Christmas tree, which will be lit in early December by President Obama.

According to the Maine Arts Commission, some of the clear ornaments have pieces of driftwood, shells, sand and other items found on Peaks Island inside of them, while others are attached to pieces of fishing net.

The ornaments were sent to Washington this week.

Peaks Island artists Cole Caswell and Jessica George headed up the project.
