BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory has been awarded a $1.3 million grant that will go toward to expanding its database on toxics in the environment.

The research institution in Bar Harbor says the grant will allow it to add information to its Comparative Toxicogenomics Database on how chemicals in the environment affect human health. The five-year grant comes from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.

The database was started at the laboratory in 2005. It is a free online resource.
