Yarmouth – Edwin C. “Brownie” Brown, 96, died peacefully Dec. 18 after a short illness.
Born in New Gloucester on Oct. 11, 1914, the only child of Chester A. and Bessie (Rowe) Brown, he attended New Gloucester schools and later moved to Yarmouth, where he graduated from Yarmouth High School in 1931 at age 16. He later graduated from Northeastern Business College in Portland.
On Jan. 1, 1940, he married Marion Seabury at the First Universalist Church in Yarmouth and they were married for 70 years.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Nov. 3, 1943, and served in the Pacific until Feb. 4, 1946.
Upon returning to Yarmouth, he went to work for the U.S. Post Office and on July 1, 1946, he was appointed post master of the Yarmouth Post Office by President Harry Truman, a position he held until his retirement on May 31, 1971. Soon after his retirement, he worked in real estate for a few years.
He loved all animals, especially his cats, and had many interests over his 96 years, including chess, golf, horse racing, gardening and the stock market.
One of his favorite places to visit was Disney World in Orlando, Fla., and often spoke with fondness of the trip he and his wife took with their grandchildren, Robin and Brian.
He is survived by his loving wife Marion of Yarmouth; his two daughters, Frances Rioux and her husband Robert of Yarmouth; and Lois J. Brown of Old Orchard Beach; his two loving grandchildren, Robin Reed and her husband Alan of New Gloucester and Brian Rioux and his wife Kara of Portland; three great-grandchildren, Emily Reed and Dylan Reed, both of New Gloucester, and Joey Rioux of Portland.
His family wishes to express their thanks to Coastal Manor in Yarmouth for all the love, kindness and compassion they gave him during his stay there.
There will be a private family graveside service later in the spring.
