PORTLAND — A consent decree of permanent injunction has been filed against the Portland Shellfish Co. for unsanitary conditions at its processing plants in Portland and South Portland.

The action, filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court by U.S. Attorney Thomas E. Delahanty, follows several recalls in the past two years of Portland Shellfish’s cooked lobster meat.

The meat was found to be contaminated by the bacteria Listeria monocytogenese, which causes listeriorsis, a potentially fatal disease.

In the consent decree the Portland company agreed to fully comply with the conditions set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to ensure that the company is following food safety regulations, such as testing its product for the bacteria.

Jeffrey Holden, president and founder of Portland Shellfish Co., said his company had made a number of sanitation improvements at its crab processing facility on Dartmouth Street in South Portland and a lobster and shrimp facility on Waldron Way in Portland. The plants ceased operating Tuesday. Holden said expected them to resume operation shortly.
