Saco police say they are searching for two men who were interrupted during a burglary, fired shots at the homeowner and then carjacked a South Portland teenager and forced her to drive them to a getaway car.

The incident happened Thursday on Louden Road, when a 38-year-old man came home at 3 p.m. and confronted two men who had broken into his house.

The homeowner chased the two, one hauling an empty loading dolly. They ran into the road and forced a car, driven by an 18-year-old woman from South Portland, to stop. The men were loading the dolly into the car when the burglary victim caught up, police said.

One of the men pulled a handgun and fired two shots. One of the slugs pierced the man’s pants, but caused no injury, said Police Chief Brad Paul.

The men forced the driver to leave and, after speaking with someone by cell phone, ordered her to drive to the corner of New County Road and Smutty Lane. There, the suspects climbed into a red sedan and drove off, police said.

The teenage driver started driving back toward Route 112 and was pulled over near Saco Middle School, police said. Police initially treated her as a suspect, but later decided she had been forced to drive the men, police said.

The suspects are white and in their early 20s. One has dark hair, brown eyes and a beard, and was wearing a brown canvas work jacket, a T-shirt and work boots. The other was clean-shaven, with straight hair combed back and a long, narrow nose, police said.

Anyone who saw anything suspicious at that time in the area are asked to call 282-8216 or 284-4535.
