PORTLAND — Cumberland County Justice Joyce A. Wheeler this afternoon sentenced Linda Dolloff of Standish to 25 years in prison with all but 16 suspended for trying to kill her husband with a softball bat in 2009 then shooting herself to cover it up.

Dollof’s attorney, Daniel Lilley of Portland, had requested a sentence of 10 years with all but three suspended. But District Attorney Stephanie Anderson had earlier today recommended a 30-year prison term, with five years suspended.

Dolloff faced a maximum of 30 years in prison on the charge.

Anderson’s recommendation to Wheeler came during a sentencing hearing this afternoon that included extensive testimony from Dr. Carlyle Voss, a forensic psychiatrist who evaluated Dolloff for the court.

Voss concluded that Dolloff had a narcisstic and anti-social personality, evidenced by a pattern of lying and excessive vanity.

Lilley disputed those characterizations during a one-hour cross-examination of Voss. Lilley was presenting arguments this afternoon to rebut the prosecutor’s recommendation and support a shorter sentence.

Dolloff was convicted last May 11 in a jury trial of attempted murder, elevated aggravated assault and filing a false report.

Prosecutors at the trial said Linda Dolloff grabbed a softball bat that Jeffrey Dolloff treasured, approached her sleeping husband and beat him nearly to death. She then went into a hallway with a gun from the top drawer of her husband’s dresser, shot herself and called 911 to report that an intruder had come in, beat her husband and then grabbed the gun to shoot her.
