MARIA PALOPOLI, a seventh-grade science teacher at Brunswick Junior High School, and Shawn Towle, a Falmouth Middle School math teacher, were among 103 educators from across the country to be honored with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching

Each winner received an all-expenses-paid trip to the nation’s capital, where participated in several days of educational and celebratory events, including visits with members of Congress and science agency leaders. Each honoree also was awarded $10,000 from the National Science Foundation to be used at their discretion.

LEBANON

LEBANON RESCUE collected 857 coats and snow suits during its annual coat drive. Those garments will help local children and young adults stay warm this winter. The department collects the winter wear from November through December each year as part of the Coats for Kids Campaign, which is coordinated by WCSH-TV (Channel 6).

THE MAINE HISTORICAL SOCIETY is offering a free program next month of 10 classes on local history, art, architecture and public speaking.

The program, Portland’s History Docents, is designed to produce volunteer guides for six historical sites, including the Wadsworth-Longfellow House, the Portland Observatory and the Tate House Museum.

The classes will be 9 a.m. to noon Thursdays Feb. 17 through April 21 at the Maine Historical Society on Congress Stree. To sign up for the program, call 774-5561.

 

THE TELLING ROOM Is sponsoring a writing contest for middle and high school students beginning this month and ending March 1.

The theme is “play.” Prizes will be given in three categories: fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Cash prizes and books will be awarded to the winners. One winner in each category will have their work published in Maine Magazine and will be featured at The Telling Room’s annual celebration of student work in May at the Portland Public Library.

BUXTON

THE BUXTON GARDEN CLUB has donated $1,080 to Keep the Heat On!, a local fuel assistance charity. The proceeds were raised during the club’s 20th annual Tree Festival at the Bar Mills Community Church.

 

BONNY EAGLE MIDDLE SCHOOL seventh-grade students in the Stirling Clan recently were honored for their efforts to collect care package items benefiting U.S. military troops as part of the “Support Our Troops” campaign. For the past three years, the students have collected items ranging from toiletries, snack foods, books, games and writing materials for the troops beginning around Veterans Day in November. Their latest cache of items, packed in 20 or so boxes, were delivered to the Freeport Flag Ladies. who will ship the packages to the troops stationed overseas.
