LIMINGTON – Organizers are expecting another big turnout for ice fishing in the seventh annual Horne Pond Derby in Limington on Saturday.

The derby is held at the Horne Pond public launch and parking will be off Moy Mo Da Yo Road in Limington.

The pond will be stocked with brook trout for the derby. Fishing derby organizers are Todd Boothby of Limington and Hollis resident Steve Rodimak of Fishing 4 A Cause. Boothby last week reported 10 inches of ice on the pond.

Besides the fishing, other activities will include a kids casting contest and jigging clinic along with door prizes, food, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and music with the local band Phoenix Five playing 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

The fishing derby is sponsored by Cabela’s along with several area businesses including Nappi Distributors in Gorham. The derby for both adults and children will benefit Camp Sunshine in Casco and Ice Fishing 4 a Cause.

Entry fee for adults is $15; children, $5. Boothby said last year 700 registered for the derby with 225 kids and 475 adults. “Anyone can enter,” Rodimak said.

With five prizes in the adult category, the first place winner for the largest trout will haul in 15 percent of all adult tickets sold. As an example, if 500 tickets are sold, the top prize will be $1,125.

For kids, there will be first, second and third prizes in five divisions – trout, white perch, yellow perch, pickerel and bass. First place in each of the kids’ division includes a Cabela’s $50 gift certificate.

Boothby said every kid who enters receives a prize and a chance to win a lifetime hunting and fishing license donated by “Hooked on Fishing not Drugs.”

Anglers can register for the derby on line by visiting icefishforkids.com or at the pond 4-9 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 21, and at 4 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 22. Fishing will be 5:15 to 3 p.m. on Saturday. The awards ceremony will be at 3:30 p.m. at the boat launch.
