Winter Carnival weekend

The OOB365 Winter Carnival 2011 will unfold this weekend.

It will kick off with a sliding party from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the snow hill on Old Orchard Street and featuring sled competition trophies for best decorated and fastest sleds and an after party at The Brunswick.

On Saturday, winter activities and vendors will be on hand from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and a Slippery Slope Pub Crawl will be held from 5:30 p.m. to midnight. Participation buttons are available for $10 each by calling 934-2681 or e-mailing Linda Mailhot at lindamailhot@gmail.com.

‘Hoops for Heart’ event

Saint Joseph’s College is hosting “Hoops for Heart” Sunday at the Harold Alfond Center on the Standish campus.

Children in grades 4-8 can participate in games such is knockout and HORSE from noon to 2 p.m. and learn ball-handling skills with players from the Saint Joseph’s men’s and women’s basketball team The event will include a three versus three tournament for high school students, Saint Joseph’s students, and adults. Prizes will be awarded to the winning team.

Organizers are asking for a donation to participate in the event for younger children. The rock wall and swimming pool will be open for families with students younger than fourth grade.

A $5 donation is requested for the second part of the event. All proceeds will benefit the American Heart Association. To pre-register, call 893-6615.

Wildlife Day at Reserve

The Wells Reserve, Center for Wildlife and York County Audubon Society will co-sponsor a Winter Wildlife Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the reserve, 42 Laudholm Farm Road.

The day is aimed at celebrating wildlife and their habitats via live animal presentations, tracking walks and a related project for kids to take home. Attendance is free. For more details, call 646-1555 or go to www.wellsreserve.org.

Snow Movers’ weekend

The Owls Head Transportation Museum, 117 Museum St., will hold its fifth annual Snow Movers Winter Transportation Festival from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The event will feature Lombard Log Hauler demonstrations, Model T snowmobile rides, an antique snowmobile parade and a variety of family-oriented activities. Collectors and experts on antique and vintage snowmobiles will be on hand to showcase some of their rare models.

Play on Somali immigration

The one-woman dramatic presentation “Checkered Floors,” detailing the Somali immigration in Maine, will be performed at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Nasson Community Center’s Little Theatre, 457 Main St.

Bay Chamber youth choir

Bay Chamber will begin offering a youth choir on March 2 as part of its new Community Music School.

The seven-week program will meet for rehearsals in the recital hall at the Shepherd Block. The purpose to provide training in vocal technique and exposure to the great choral works from cultures throughout the world. Basic note reading skills and interpretation of music literature will be part of the choir experience.

Members are required to attend one 90-minute rehearsal each week and be available for dress rehearsals and performances. The fee is $150, and scholarships are available. For more details, call 236-2823.

‘Chemical Reaction’ showing

Paul Tukey will screen his documentary film, “A Chemical Reaction: The Story of a True Green Revolution,” at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Belfast Free Library, 106 High St. After the viewing Tukey will take questions from the audience.
