Sam Tarling of Cumberland won the 10-kilometer men’s freestyle title this morning as the NCAA Skiing Championships got under way at the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vt.
Tarling, a 20-year-old sophomore at Dartmouth College, bested a field of 39 that included fellow Mainer and Dartmouth teammate Nils Koons of Sidney, who finished fourth.
Tarling’s time was 26 minutes, 5.7 seconds. The runner-up was a Colorado University skier from Norway, Vegard Kjoelhamar, who finished in 26:10.
Welly Ramsey of New Sharon and the University of Maine-Presque Isle placed 24th in 27:26.
