A bantam boys hockey team from Casco Bay won a national title, 5-0, over a team from Nashville this morning in Williamsville, N.Y.

Competing in the USA Youth Hockey Tier II national tournament for boys 14 and under, Casco Bay swept through pool play with a perfect 4-0 record before defeating Atlanta 8-0 in Saturday’s semifinals and Nashville in the final.

Griffin Py of Portland, Sterling Weatherbie of Cape Elizabeth, Reid Howland of Cumberland, Colin Merrill of Portland and Ben Freeman of Falmouth scored for Casco Bay. Kyle Kramlich of North Yarmouth and Will Coleman of Yarmouth combined on the shutout.

Freeman and Weatherbie each had two assists for Casco Bay, which outscored opponents 45-1 in six games. Stephen Barry and Zack Luce of Portland and Peter Hurley and Ted Hart of Cumberland also had assists in the championship game.

Freeman (12 goals, 13 assists), Weatherbie (10 goals, 10 assists) and Hart (six goals, nine assists) were the tournament’s top three scorers.
