Hundreds of people lined Congress Street waving flags at marchers in a Memorial Day parade this morning.

Grand marshal of the parade, the Rev. William Doughty of Portland, called on observers to honor the Army of the Occupation of World War II.

“The people I honor today are heros you won’t hear about unless you read history books,” said Doughty.
Wreaths were placed on the Portland Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Monument Square.

A plaque honoring fallen officers of the Portland Police Department was scheduled for unveiling at noon at the Portland Police Department Courtyard at 109 Middle St.
