PORTLAND — One man is in serious condition at Maine Medical Center after being hit by a sport utility vehicle on Munjoy Hill following Monday night’s fireworks display.

Witnesses said that the driver of a Dodge Durango, Jason Beaudoin, 34, of Portland backed into another car at Congress and Munjoy streets as he was preparing to leave the area at 10:15 p.m., police said. The owner of the other car confronted him and following a brief altercation, Beaudoin drove off, hitting the man, who is 39 and from New Hampshire, in the process, police said.

The man was badly injured in what police are calling a hit-and-run crash. Police say the crash is under investigation and it’s not immediately clear whether the victim was injured in the collision or from hitting the road.

Beaudoin was found at 6 a.m. and interviewed. The Durango was impounded. Police say he is likely to be charged in connection with the incident but the nature of the charges will be determined by the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office following completion of the investigation.

Police said there was no evidence that alcohol played a role in the crash.

The crash happened shortly after the fireworks ended and many people were still in the area. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about the incident is asked to call Portland Police at 874-8554.
