PORTLAND — A Portland man is on trial for murder today for the shooting death of a once-close friend outside a Parkside apartment building.

Daudoit Butsitsi, 25, is accused of shooting 24-year-old Serge Mulongo at close range six times in February 2010. The prosecution and defense gave their opening statements in Cumberland County Superior Court this morning.

Assistant Attorney General Leane Zainea said that the two men were good friends and roommates but that their relationship deteriorated in the months before the shooting. The shooting came after a number of fights, including one the morning of Mulongo’s death, she said.

Zainea told the jury that by the conclusion of the case, it will be clear that Butsitsi was motivated by a desire for revenge.

Anthony Sineni, Butsitsi’s court-appointed lawyer, said he will not deny his client was the shooter but that he was acting in self-defense. Butsitsi saw Mulongo grow more violent and unpredictable and feared for his life, Sineni said.
