WESTBROOK — A section of East Bridge Street had to be closed to traffic today after a section of the street under construction became flooded.

Greg Hamilton, the city’s emergency management director, said the section of East Bridge Street closest to Route 302 and the Presumpscot River will remain closed indefinitely. The river rose slightly due to heavy overnight rainfall that preceded Tropical Storm Irene.

Hamilton said the flooded section of East Bridge Street is a temporary construction route that is below the street’s normal grade level.

Despite street flooding, the Presumpscot River is not expected to reach flood stage during the storm, Hamilton said.

The city has also responded to downed wires on Huntress Avenue, Lowell Street and Maple Street.
