Cheverus-Lawrence game to kick off football state championship tripleheader

The Class A game between Cheverus (11-0) and Lawrence (11-0) will open Saturday’s football state championship tripleheader at Fitzpatrick Stadium.

Cheverus, the defending state champion, and Lawrence will kick off at 11:06 a.m.

The Class C game between defending state champion Yarmouth (11-0) and Bucksport (11-0) is scheduled for 2:36 p.m., and the Class B game between Wells (11-0) and Leavitt (11-0) will start at 6:06 p.m.

MLS AWARDS: David Beckham has been voted Major League Soccer’s comeback player of the year.

The former England captain, who missed most of the 2010 season because of a torn Achilles tendon, received 59.76 percent of votes from the media, players and club officials. He set up 15 goals for the Los Angeles Galaxy, which finished with the best regular-season record and plays Houston for the MLS Cup on Sunday.

The Galaxy’s Bruce Arena became the first three-time winner of coach of the year.

U.S. MEN: Carlos Bocanegra will become the 12th player to make 100 appearances for the United States when the team plays Slovenia in a friendly tonight at Ljubljana, Slovenia.

The Americans have only one win in six matches since Jurgen Klinsmann replaced Bob Bradley as coach in July, and are coming off a 1-0 loss Friday at France.

WTA AWARDS: Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova was chosen as the WTA’s player of the year.

Kvitova, 21, went 60-13 with six singles titles, including the season-ending tour championships, and rose from No. 34 to No. 2 in the rankings. She also won for most improved player and sportsmanship.

Sabine Lisicki of Belgium was honored as comeback player of the year, Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania was the newcomer of the year, and the top-ranked pairing of Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik won for doubles team of the year.
