WATERVILLE — The president of Colby College has confirmed that a student has drowned while spending a semester in Chile.
The college said in a statement Wednesday that 20-year-old Derrik Flahive of Littleton, Colo. was a junior global studies major and a varsity lacrosse player. President William Adams said Flahive was enrolled in the School for International Training program in Santiago, Chile.
Chilean media say Flahive drowned after a 30-foot jump at a waterfall in the Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park on Tuesday.
The Morning Sentinel reports that a community remembrance gathering is scheduled for Thursday at the school chapel. A more formal memorial service will be held after Thanksgiving.
Flahive also participated in the Colby Student Investment Association, which tries to earn positive returns for the Colby endowment.
