The Polar Bears rebounded from a pair of close losses to improve to 4-2, while the Owls fell to 2-3.
Three Bowdoin players saw double figures, led by Ryan O’Connell’s 20 points. Will Hanley notched his fifth consecutive double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds, while John Swords scored a career-high 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting with nine rebounds off the bench for the Polar Bears.
Patrick Manifold led all players with 21 points for the Owls, while Kyle Corrigan (11 points) and Gerardo Vasquez (10) also reached double figures for Presque Isle.
Bowdoin carried a 43-33 edge into the break, but the Owls stayed within striking distance thanks to hot outside shooting. Presque Isle nailed 12 3-pointers but were outrebounded 45-21, including 15-8 on the offensive glass.
Bowdoin cashed in 21 secondchance points and outscored the visitors 38-16 in the paint. The Polar Bears also got 47 points from the bench and slowly put the contest out of reach by posting a 53-33 advantage in the second period.
The Polar Bears will return to action tonight at Maine Maritime Academy in Castine at 7 p.m.
Women’s basketball
Colby held cold-shooting Bowdoin to just 29 percent from the field in a 56-41 New England Small College Athletic Conference victory on Saturday afternoon in a battle of nationally- ranked foes at Wadsworth Gymnasium in Waterville.
The 15th-ranked Mules improved to 5-0, while the 10th-ranked Polar Bears suffered their second-straight setback and fell to 3-2.
Jil Vaughn led all scorers with 17 points and 10 rebounds for Colby, which also got 12 points from Aarika Ritchie.
Bowdoin’s lone player in double digits was Kaitlin Donahoe, who posted 12 points.
The Polar Bears connected on just 16-of-55 from the field and 1-of-10 from 3-point range. The Mules struggled from long distance as well, making just five of 22, but Colby finished 21-of-52 from the field in shooting 40.4 percent.
Colby used a late spurt before intermission to take a 28-21 lead at the break, and Jacky McLaughlin nailed a 3-pointer to quickly push the lead to 10 points, 31-21. The lead bounced between five and 10 points for most of the second stanza.
Bowdoin trimmed the lead to five points, 38-33, after a Donahoe lay-in with 11:20 to go, but Colby responded with a 12-4 run to push the lead to double digits.
Bowdoin looks to bounce back on Tuesday at home against Husson at 7 p.m.
Women’s ice hockey
Colby rebounded from a 5-0 setback Friday to defeat Bowdoin, 2-1 in overtime at Alfond Rink on Saturday afternoon in NESCAC action.
The Polar Bears fell to 1-2-1, while the Mules improved to 2-3-1.
Bowdoin dominated the opening period, holding a 17-7 edge in shots, but failed to find the back of their net until the final minute when Lauren Pashkowski’s first tally of the season gave the visitors a 1-0 lead with just 42 seconds left in the frame.
After a scoreless second period, Colby upped its attack and outshot Bowdoin 12-5 in the third period, finally cashing in when Jazz Bazinet-Phillips found the back of the net with 5:36 left in regulation.
Bowdoin was called for a penalty 3:17 into overtime, and it didn’t take long for the Mules to find the gamewinning goal as Carolyn Fuwa notched the clincher 32 seconds into the power play to give Colby the win.
Bowdoin held a 40- 32 edge in shots. Tara Connolly made 30 stops for the Polar Bears, while Brianne Wheeler stopped 39 between the pipes for the Mules.
On Friday, Bowdoin picked up its first victory of the season in the win over Colby at Sidney J. Watson Arena.
Stephanie Ludy scored twice for the Polar Bears, who had won five straight overall against the Mules. Connolly made 21 saves in her second career shutout.
After Bowdoin garnered an early power play, Ludy knocked home a rebound off a Dominique Lozzi shot at 5:35. Less than a minute later, Kayte Holtz found Kim Tess-Wanat for a top-shelf tally to give the hosts an early two-goal lead.
Bowdoin upped its lead to three goals less than five minutes into the second period as Ludy intercepted the puck in the Colby zone and wristed a shot that deflected off Wheeler and trickled over the goal line.
A change in net for Colby made little difference. After Grace Dickinson took over Al Chlebeck redirected a Maddie Baird shot into the goal at 7:01 for a 4-0 lead, and the Polar Bears continued their onslaught at 15:32 when Holtz took a feed from Lozzi and deposited the puck over Dickinson’s shoulder for a 5-0 lead at the end of two periods.
Wheeler made seven saves in 26:01, allowing three goals for Colby before being replaced by Dickinson, who stopped 16 shots and permitted two goals over the final 33:59.
