BAILEY ISLAND — Andrew Highet, age 92, of Stoneham and Bailey Island, Maine, died December 5, 2011, following a lengthy decline. He was the devoted husband of the late Elsie (Peterson) Highet. Born and raised in Somerville, MA, he was the son of the late William and Jean (McQuaker) Highet.
Mr. Highet served in the US Army as a gunner during WWII, having fought in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theater. For thirty two years he was employed as a driver for the M.B.T.A., retiring in 1978. Following his retirement, he and Elsie moved to Bailey Island, Maine where they enjoyed many years in their home overlooking the bay.
Mr. Highet was a member of the Mystic Valley Masonic Lodge in Arlington and the Aleppo Temple in Wilmington. He and Elsie were wonderful companions and always together; they enjoyed traveling, visiting Hawaii and Europe and joining the 55+ bus tours. They had fond memories of camping with their family and attending the annual Highland Games at Loon Mountain. Together they crafted beautiful “sun catchers” of stained glass that were proudly displayed in the windows of their family and friends, and they shared the love of their dogs.
He is survived by three sons, Robert Highet of Brunswick, ME, James Highet and his wife Sherri of Billerica and Paul Highet and his wife Amy of Stoneham. He was the grandfather of Justin, Scott and Alexander and brother of the late William, James, Jean and Elizabeth.
A memorial gathering will be held Thurs., 6- 8 P. M. at Anderson- Bryant Funeral Home, 4 Common St., Stoneham followed by a Masonic Service at 8P.M. Burial with military honors will be Friday at 10 A.M. in Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford. In lieu of flowers, please send a memorial tribute to the Shriners Hospital, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114.
