Portland Ballet Company stages “The Victorian Nutcracker” at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Friday at Merrill Auditorium in Portland. In a season of traditional Christmas programs, the production stands out for its originality and sense of place. It’s set in Victorian-era Portland with the city’s historical figures, and the stage sets are designed based on Deering Oaks Park and the Victoria Mansion.

The ballet also features a cast of professional dancers under the leadership of executive and artistic director Eugenia O’Brien and associate artistic director Nell Shipman. This year’s conductor is Sean Newhouse, assistant conductor at the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Tickets cost $17 to $47, and are available at the Merrill box office, at porttix.com, and by calling 842-0800. For information, call 772-9671 or visit portlandballet.org. Read Thursday’s GO section in the Portland Press Herald for an interview with Newhouse.
