PORTLAND — A fire that started in the kitchen of Brighton Avenue apartment has displaced a woman and two children.

The fire, which was reported about 3:40 p.m. Saturday, started near the stove in the first-floor apartment of the three-unit building at 234 Brighton Ave.

Portland Deputy Fire Chief Bill Flynn said the fire was contained to the kitchen and put out in 15 minutes, but did “extensive damage,” forcing the family to leave.

Flynn said the family, which is being assisted by the Red Cross, was home when the fire started. He said there is an ongoing investigation into its cause.
