PITTSFIELD — Freshmen Sophie Sreden and Leia Graves came off the bench to provide solid rebounding as the Morse High School girls basketball team earned a 46-33 victory over Maine Central Institute in a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B game on Monday.

Morse (4-7 and slated to visit Maranacook on Jan. 24) trailed 9-6 after a quarter. The Shipbuilders, who struggled from the foul line in the first half (six of 20), pulled into an 18-18 halftime tie, with a strong third quarter putting the visitors in front 33-24.

Katie Henrikson paced Morse with 12 points and three steals, while Tori Field chipped in 10 points and five swipes. Kerry Cummings added nine points, while Sreden and Graves combined on 16 rebounds.

The Shipbuilders finished 16 of 36 at the line after a solid 10-of-16 effort in the second half.

Mitchell Black scored 17 points as the Dragons improved to 7-4 with a KVAC win at Skowhegan.

Ryan Black and Konnor Scarponi added 12 points apiece for the victors, who visit Cony on Friday.

Levi Barnes had 18 points and Ethan Johnson 17 for Skowhegan (3-8).

In KVAC action Monday in Topsham, Mt. Blue improved to 8-3, while the Eagles dipped to 0-11.

Cam Sennick paced the Cougars with 25 points, while Steve Yardley and Hart had eight each.

At the foul line, Mt. Blue was nine of 14 and Mt. Ararat five of 12.

Josh Wright led Mt. Ararat with 15 points, while Brett Martin and Mason Griffin chipped in with five each.

“Mt. Blue rushed out to a 36-15 halftime lead and was never really threatened,” said Mt. Ararat coach Aaron Watson. “We had a great third quarter to cut the lead to nine, but Mt. Blue opened the fourth on a 7- 0 run to get it back to 16.”

Mt. Ararat travels to Edward Little on Friday.

The host Eagles took one on the chin Monday as Mt. Blue outscored Mt. Ararat 13-8 down the stretch.

Gabby Foy led the 7-4 Cougars with 16 points and Corinne Dingley added 11.

Leah Hitchcock paced the 7-4 Eagles, scheduled to host Edward Little on Friday, with 10 points and seven rebounds, while Caitlin LaFountain had nine points and six boards, Mallory Nelson seven points and six caroms, and Lindsey Cornelison six points.

Mt. Ararat led 15-14, 25-17 and 34-30 at the quarter breaks and shot 18 of 44 from the floor and six of 10 from the line. Mt. Blue was 14 of 34 from the floor and 14 of 21 from the foul line.

BRUNSWICK GIRLS 1

Rachel Moroney set up Annie Kelly for the game’s only goal as the Brunswick High School girls hockey team slipped past York 1-0 on Monday at Dover, N.H.

The Dragons improved to 11-2-1, while the Wildcats fell to 9-3-2.

While on the power play, Moroney skated out of the left corner and fed a pass across the crease to Kelly, who slipped the puck behind York goaltender Olivia Drew with 4:20 left in regulation.

Erin Gay earned the shutout in goal for Brunswick with 23 saves, including a breakaway stop in the third period. Drew finished with 15 stops.

Brunswick is scheduled to host Greely in a key Eastern girls contest on Saturday at Sidney J. Watson Arena.

On Saturday at Sidney J. Watson Arena, the visiting Blue Devils scored three third-period goals to pull away from 4-4-1 Brunswick.

Down 1-0 in the second period, the Dragons tied the game when Matt Brooks scored a short-handed goal 5:17 into the frame. Dylan Towle picked up an assist.

Devon Beland, Kyle Lemelin, Brian Hall, Brandon Tiner and Jake Bergeron each scored a goal for Lewiston (4-3), with Lemelin, Stefan Vallee, David Cusson and Brett Vallee each earning an assist.
