ORONO – In overtime, when University of Maine forward Mark Anthoine gathered the loose puck at center ice, teammate Matt Mangene followed.
Anthoine, the sophomore from Lewiston, dropped a perfect pass for Mangene, and then moved in to obstruct Boston College goalie Chris Venti.

Mangene launched a slap shot over Venti’s glove to give the Black Bears a 4-3 win, with 78 seconds left in overtime, Friday night before 4,950 at Alfond Arena.
“That was a rocket of a shot,” Anthoine said.
Mangene applauded Anthoine’s play and let out a sigh of relief.
“Those were two points we desperately needed,” Mangene said.
Maine improved to 11-8-3, 8-7-2 in Hockey East. The third-ranked Eagles dropped to 14-9-1, 10-6-1.
Adam Shemansky scored twice for Maine, including the tying goal in regulation on a 5-on-3 power play 14:49 into the third period.
Kyle Beattie added a goal and assist, and goalie Dan Sullivan made 33 saves, including 16 in a hectic second period.
The Maine win spoiled the home-state return of BC defenseman Brian Dumoulin of Biddeford. He tallied a goal and two assists.
Dumoulin poked in a loose puck at 4:03 of the third period, giving BC a 3-2 lead. But then the Eagles hit the penalty box.
“One of our objectives was to keep them off the power play,” said BC Coach Jerry York. “Then we give them a 5-on-3 power play.
A hit-from-behind call at 13:07 was followed by a cross checking penalty at 13:22.
Maine’s top unit did not score and Coach Tim Whitehead called timeout to give his best players another chance.
Brian Flynn got the puck in deep and Joey Diamond tipped it over to Shemansky at the far post. He stuffed it in.
In overtime, BC made a sloppy pass out of its zone. Defenseman Mark Nemec got a stick on the puck and then Anthoine took off with it.
“Exciting,” Whitehead said. “A lot of swings in momentum.”
Boston College jumped ahead 1-0 on a 4-on-3 power-play goal by Bill Arnold at 3:20.
The Eagles looked to score again on a Chris Kreider one-timer from outside the crease at 6:35. But on review, it was disallowed because Kreider knocked the puck in with his skate. York agreed with the call.
Maine tied it when Shemansky flung a quick shot from the boards outside the left circle, surprising Venti. The puck went between his pads at 8:52.
At 2:19 of the second period, Beattie led a rush into the Eagles zone. As a BC defender closed in, Beattie wristed a score over Venti’s blocker for a 2-1 Maine lead.
BC tied it with a second power-play goal, at 15:48. Sullivan made two solid saves, but Eagles kept possession. Dumoulin found Barry Almeida alone in the slot and his one-timer beat Sullivan for a 2-2 tie.
“We were lucky get out of the second tied,” Whitehead said. “Sullivan was tremendous and kept us in there.”
The two teams meet again today at 4 p.m.
“I think we can bring more to the table,” Sullivan said. “I know they will.”
