BOSTON – The University of Maine and Boston University entered the third period tied.

Heard that one before?

In December, Maine and BU were tied after two periods before the Terriers scored four goals in a rout.

This time Maine got the jump and a 4-2 win over the Terriers on Friday night before 5,066 at Agganis Arena.

Mark Anthoine tipped in a Spencer Abbott shot on the power play for the winner at 10:08.

Abbott added an empty-netter to secure the victory.

Maine goalie Dan Sullivan made 28 saves and was named the No. 1 star.

Maine (13-8-3, 10-7-2 in Hockey East), ranked 20th nationally, won for only the second time in 13 games at Agganis. The second-ranked Terriers dropped to 15-7-1, 12-5-1.

“Any time you can get any points coming out of BU, it’s a good night,” Maine Coach Tim Whitehead said.

The Terriers outshot the Black Bears 30-25, but Maine had Sullivan and some opportunistic scoring.

“They shut us down pretty good all night,” Abbott said. “Basically we had to get the puck to the net.”

Maine contained BU for the most part. Sullivan robbed a few Terriers, including a nifty glove save on a short-handed breakaway in the second period.

“Their goalie made a couple of huge saves,” BU Coach Jack Parker said. “And Maine did a good job of bottling us up at center ice.”

Still, BU took a 1-0 first-period lead on its only power play of the game, an Alex Chiasson one-timer at 17:56.

“We only had one power play because we didn’t play hard enough,” Parker said.

In the second period, with one second remaining on Maine’s first power play, Adam Shemansky fired in a shot from the left circle at 5:15.

Maine took a 2-1 lead after a perfect breakout pass by Mark Nemic to John Parker, who roofed a backhander over Kie-ran Millan’s blocker at 8:22.

The game was then delayed, as a set of lights on one side of the rink went out.

The teams retreated to their locker room for about 20 minutes. When they came back out, BU tied it.

Sullivan blocked two shots, but then Ross Gaudet shot from the side, banking it off Sullivan into the goal at 12:38.

The Terriers put the Black Bears on their heels the rest of the period, but Sullivan held his ground, making one save while sprawled with two players atop him.

“After the break, we knew they would come storming out,” Whitehead said. “(Sullivan) was even better (Friday) than last weekend (in a sweep of Boston College).

“I was glad to see the Zamboni come out (ending the second period). We said, ‘Let’s get a breather and swing the momentum back to us.’ “

Maine was without top-liner Joey Diamond (hip pointer) in the third period.

Anthoine replaced Diamond on the top power-play unit. His tip-in for the winner was his eighth power-play goal of the season.

The teams meet again at 7:30 tonight.
