Historical society sets meeting

The Scarborough Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at 647 Route 1.

Bud Warren, co-founder of the Tide Mill Institute, will give a presentation about tidal mills that existed along Maine’s Coast.

The monthly presentations are free and open to the public.

Saint Joseph’s winter carnival

Saint Joseph’s College is kicking off its 100th anniversary with a winter carnival and centennial extravaganza on Friday and Saturday at the college.

The event will feature public sledding, skating, sleigh rides, snow sculpture contests, snowshoe tours and an open swim and sauna at the Alfond Center. The event will end with a chocolate lounge and ice bar on Saturday night.

The public is welcome to attend. Most of the events are free.

The South Portland Cape Elizabeth Rotary Club is holding a winter festival on Friday and Saturday in Mill Creek Park.

The event will include snowman making, a snowshoe relay race, skating exhibitions, band concerts, shoot the puck on the goalie, ice sculpturing and pony rides.

TV3 offering student workshop

TV3, the educational access station managed by the Portland Public Schools, will offer a free workshop for students who want to learn how to videotape class projects, concerts, sports games and other school activities for broadcast on the station.

The workshop will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Feb. 8 at TV3’s studio at Portland Arts and Technology High School, 196 Allen Ave.

The workshop is for students in grades five and above in Portland public schools. Enrollment is limited and advance registration is required. To sign up, call 874-8173.

Lincoln Club to hold annual dinner

The Cumberland County Lincoln Club will hold its annual dinner at 7 p.m. on Feb. 11 at the Italian Heritage Center, 40 Westland Ave.

The dinner is held every year to honor the 16th president, Abraham Lincoln.

The guest speaker is Lynda Sudlow, a Civil War historian and author of “A Vast Army of Women.”

A presentation about learning how to support young children struggling to cope with emotions will be held from 5:45 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Opportunity Alliance — PROP East End Children’s Workshop, 215 Congress St.

The workshop will be led by Jasmine Smith, a mental health clinician, Opportunity Alliance — PROP and Bethanie Jacques, children’s coordinator, CASA.

Smith and Jacques will discuss techniques that parents and caregivers can use to communicate with children struggling to cope with emotions.

Parents and caregivers are invited from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. for dinner and support.

SAT preparation course offered

The Springvale Public Library is offering a reading and discussion series, “Making Sense of the Civil War.”

The program begins Feb. 6 at the library and will be offered on the first Monday of every month through June 4.

The program, “Let’s Talk About It,” is provided by the Maine Humanities Council’s Harriet P. Henry Center for the Book in cooperation with the Maine State Library.

Author to discuss ‘Museums’ book

Janet Mendelsohn, author of “Maine’s Museums: Art, Oddities & Artifacts,” will give a talk at noon Thursday at the York Public Library, 15 Long Sands Road.

Mendelsohn will talk about Maine’s art, history, maritime and museums.

Library to show comedic operas

The comedic opera DVD series is returning to the Kennebunk Free Library.

At 1 p.m. on Sunday, there will be a showing of Rossini’s Il Barbiere Di Siviglia with Joyce DiDonato and Juan Diego Florez. The opera was directed by Antionio Pappano and Moshe Leiser.

Bookshop opening for season

The Skidompha Secondhand Book Shop on Elm Street will open for the season on Wednesday with an offer to commemorate its 25 years in business.

Customers who spend $25 or more will receive a coupon for $5 toward a future purchase.

The book shop, which was founded in 1986, is a major fundraiser for Skidompha Public Library. It is run entirely by volunteers and all books are donated.
