BRUNSWICK — The Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust announced plans today to open a 60-plot community garden this year on land that is now part of Crystal Spring Farm on Pleasant Hill Road in Brunswick.

Executive Director Angela Twitchell says creating a community garden has been a goal of the Land Trust since it acquired the farm in 1994.

“This garden will give people who don’t have access to land the opportunity to grow their own food and be part of a community of gardeners,” Twitchell said, in a prepared statement.

The community garden will feature a large ‘Common Good’ area where volunteers will grow vegetables for the Midcoast Hunger Prevention Program.

The Tom Settlemire Community Garden is named after a long-time board member and past president of the Land Trust.

Garden plots will be 10 by 16 feet in size and will include access to organic compost, tools, water, and master gardener consultants. Each plot holder must agree to contribute five volunteer hours a year at the garden.

Applications for plots are available at the Land Trust’s office, 108 Maine St., Brunswick, or by calling 729-7694. Each plot will cost $35. Land Trust members can obtain a plot for $25.
