WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Despite a game-high 25 points and 10 rebounds by Bowdoin’s Jill Henrikson, the Williams College women’s basketball team defeated the Polar Bears for the just the second time since 2000, 67-55 on Saturday afternoon.

 

 

Henrikson led all players with her 25 points, including a 10-for-11 effort from the free throw line, and 10 rebounds and three steals. Amy Hackett also scored 12 for Bowdoin. Jill Greenberg paced the Ephs with 19 points. The loss snapped Bowdoin’s five- game win streak and dropped the Polar Bears to 16-6 (5-3 NESCAC). Williams improved to 18-4 (5-3 NESCAC).

Bowdoin came out firing, taking a 14-4 lead just six minutes into the contest. Williams responded with an 8-0 surge to get back into the game and the squads settled in for a backand forth affair for the remainder of the period with the hosts holding a 32-30 edge at the break.

The Polar Bears regained the lead early in the second stanza, but a Greenberg 3-pointer sparked a 12-0 run that gave Williams a 44-34 edge with 15:12 to go. Bowdoin chipped away at the Ephs lead, coming within two points, 57- 55, on a Nicole Coombes lay-in with 5:00 remaining. The Ephs closed the game on a 10-0 run to seal the victory.

At Middlebury on Friday, the Polar Bears outscored the Panthers 49-27 in the second half for a comefrom behind 68-58 NESCAC victory at Pepin Gym.

Bowdoin was paced by a seasonhigh 18 points from Hackett, followed closely by Henrikson with 17 and Coombes’ 15 points. The Bowdoin bench outscored Middlebury’s 20-6.

Women’s hockey

Bowdoin rallied from a two-goal first period deficit to complete a weekend sweep of Trinity with a 5-2 win on Saturday at Sidney J. Watson Arena.

Chelsea MacNeil had two goals and an assist for the surging Polar Bears, who improved to 10-7-3 (8-4 NESCAC) with their fourth consecutive win. The Bantams dipped to 11-9 ( 6- 6 NESCAC). Kayla Lessard stopped 25 shots in the win for Bowdoin.

Trinity came out firing in the opening period. Emily Kleidon picked up a loose puck in front and banged a shot past Lessard just 3:24 into the contest before Macauly Bauer capitalized on a 3-on-1 opportunity and blasted a slap shot to the top left corner at 11:47.

Bowdoin finally found the back of the net and reduced the deficit to 2-1. Stephanie Ludy received a centering pass from Dominque Lozzi and scored on Trinity’s Alexa Pujol at 7:51. Bowdoin tied the game with Lozzi’s quick shot at 11:53. Bowdoin took the lead at 15:39 when Kayte Holtz forced a turnover deep in the zone and fed MacNeil on the back door for the goal.

The Polar Bears increased their lead to 4-2 in the third period when Kim Tess-Wanat scored at 4:59. Mac- Neil scored her second goal at 12:11.

On Friday, the Polar Bears received a goal from five different players in a 5-0 NESCAC blanking of Trinity at Watson Arena.

Bowdoin goaltender Tara Connolly stopped 20 shots and Tess-Wanat, Shelagh Merrill, Mallory Andrews, Madeline Lane and MacNeil each scored.

Men’s hockey

Visiting Bowdoin skated to a 2-2 tie at Hamilton on Saturday afternoon.

Rob MacGregor posted one goal and one assist for the 11-5-3 Polar Bears. Danny Palumbo scored the other goal, and Nick Wetzel added an assist. Richard Nerland stopped 25 shots. Anthony Scarpino scored both goals for the 7-10-3 Continentals.

Bowdoin got on the board just 1:27 into the game when MacGregor tallied his fourth goal. Palumbo’s third goal of the season doubled the Polar Bears’ lead with 2:38 to play in the first.

Bowdoin held a 33-27 shot advantage, and was 0-for-4 on the power play. The Polar Bears killed all eight of Hamilton’s chances, and rank seventh in Division III in penalty kill percentage. Bowdoin hosts Wesleyan University for a NESCAC game on Friday at 7 p.m.

On Friday, Amherst scored twice in the third period and Jeffs netminder Jonathan LaRose had 37 stops in a 3-1 victory over the Polar Bears on Friday.

Bowdoin’s Harry Matheson scored a power-play tally at 18:07 of the first period.

Steve Messina stopped 20 shots for the Polar Bears. Bowdoin held a 38- 23 advantage in shots for the contest.

Men’s basketball

Bowdoin’s Ryan O’Connell scored a game-high 21 points and became the 22nd player in school history to surpass 1,000 career points as the Polar Bears knocked off 16th-ranked Williams in overtime on Saturday, 89-84.

O’Connell’s 21 points increased his career total to 1,015, joining classmate Will Hanley and 20 others in the history of Bowdoin men’s basketball to reach the plateau. Hanley scored 18 points with nine rebounds and four assists in the win while point guard Bryan Hurley had 14 points and five assists. Andrew Madlinger pitched in 10 points for the 15-6 Polar Bears, who shot 51.5 percent.

Michael Mayer led the 16-6 Ephs with 18 points and seven boards, while Nate Robertson scored 15 points and handed out seven assists for the Ephs.

Williams came out of the gate flat and started the game 0-for-7 from the field with two turnovers, and the Polar Bears leaped out to a 13-0 lead less than five minutes into the game.

The Ephs’ bench came in with a spark, though. Led by seven points from Mayer, the Ephs went on a 12-3 run to make the score 15-12 with 12:01 to play in the half. The Ephs finally tied the game at 20-20 with 8:22 to play after a trey from Klemm, before Mayer gave the Ephs a lead with a lay-up at the 7:42 mark.

The teams entered the break with the Ephs up 38-34.

With the score 75-73 in favor of the visitors, Eph head coach Mike Maker was hit with a technical for arguing a no- call, and the Polar Bears went up 77-73 when O’Connell hit the technical free throws.

Robertson then brought the Ephs back even as he hit two pairs of free throws that sandwiched a stop by the Ephs. Hanley scored with 39 seconds to play after posting up on the right block, but Robertson responded with a lay-up of his own, and the teams went into overtime tied 79-79.

The Ephs jumped out to an 83-79 lead in the extra period, but the Polar Bears held the Ephs without a field goal for the remainder of the period, and the Polar Bears tied the game up on a lay-up from Hanley with 2: 16 to play. Emerson was fouled at the 1:11 mark and hit one of two free throws to make it 84-83, but Hanley scored again on the right block to give the Polar Bears the lead. Bowdoin got a stop on the following possession, and hit free throws down the stretch.

On Friday, top-ranked Middlebury held off a late charge by Bowdoin as the Panthers picked up a 79-76 win.

O’Connell went nine-for-12 from the floor, including a perfect five-forfive showing from 3-point line for 23 points to lead Bowdoin. Hanley finished the game with 22 boards and four assists, while Madlinger chipped in with eight.

Indoor track

Bowdoin’s Elsa Millett made State Meet history as the Polar Bear women’s track and field team claimed its fourth consecutive Maine State Indoor Championship on Friday at Bates College.

Bowdoin scored 189 points to surpass Bates (143), Southern Maine (121) and Colby (119) for the crown.

Millett became the first athlete in the 33-year history of the event to win two running events in the same meet as the Bowdoin senior won both the 200-meter (25.72) and 400 (57.69) races. Other state-title winners for the Polar Bears included Olivia MacKenzie, who won the 5,000 by over a minute (17:44.57), Hayleigh Kein in the high jump (5- 02.25), Erin Silva in the pole vault (11-05.50) and Topsham’s Randi London in the shot put (38-05.50).

Bowdoin’s4x200meterrelay team of Emily Clark, Clea Daoud, Samantha Copland and Alee Wade were also victorious in a time of 1:48.08.

The Bowdoin men won the Maine State Championship for the first time since 2009, edging Bates in a thrilling victory at Merrill Indoor Gymnasium Saturday evening.

Bowdoin scored 201 points to finish just ahead of Bates with 195. Colby came in third with 85 points, followed by the University of Southern Maine with 71.

Bowdoin’s Matthew Hillard was named Most Valuable Athlete of the meet after wins in both the 800 (1:56.45) and one mile (4:17.12). Other Bowdoin winners in track events included Coby Horowitz in the 1,000 (2:32.01) and Samuel Seekins in the 5,000 (14:59.44).

In the field events, Chris Martin captured the triple jump with a distance of 47-06.50.
