WISCASSET — Jordan Jones scored 19 of his gamehigh 25 points in the first half, and Jason Weatherbee and Caleb Bryant controlled the paint as the seventh-seeded Wiscasset High School boys basketball team held off No. 10 Traip Academy 57-52 in a Western Maine Class C preliminary contest on Wednesday.
“Jordan was unconscious in the first half (five 3-pointers), and we shot well from the free-throw line (18 of 24),” said Wiscasset coach Dana Lawrence, whose team improved to 11-8 and takes on No. 2 Waynflete (14-3) in the Western C quarterfinals on Monday at the Augusta Civic Center (4 p.m.).
After a back-and-forth first quarter, the Wolverines led 17-13. The lead was 32-28 at the half and 43-41 through three quarters.
“It came down to which team was going to execute down the stretch, and we did,” said Lawrence.
Bryant had 11 points and nine rebounds, while Austin Haskell chipped in six points. Weatherbee pulled down a game-high 10 caroms.
Atencio Martin and Nick Foye led 5-13 Traip with 18 and 16 points, respectively. The Rangers finished seven of 14 at the line.
Freeport Girls 33, Wells 50
No. 11 Freeport missed all 16 of its 3-point attempts in falling to sixth-seeded Wells in a Western B prelim at Wells.
“We struggled getting the ball inside, and on the other end we just couldn’t hold them,” said Freeport coach Jen Chon, whose team finished 9-10. “We struggled at times on offense this season, and that continued on Wednesday. We shot a lot from outside, and not making anything allowed Wells to tripleteam Nina ( Davenport) inside.
The Falcons struggled early, falling behind 12-5. Freeport battled back to close to 19-17 at the half and still trailed by just five points, 31-26, through 24 minutes. The 13-5 Warriors made eight of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter to pull away.
Davenport paced Freeport with 16 points before fouling out. Hannah Chase added seven points, and the Falcons finished five of eight at the foul line.
Allison Furness had a game-high 21 points for Wells, which will face third-seeded Greely on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Portland Expo. Mariyah Heath added 10 points, and the Warriors were 13 of 22 at the charity stripe.
Chon loses seniors Alex Mitch and Morgan Brown to graduation.
“We turned things around late in the season to make the playoffs, and we received some valuable playoff experience that should help us in the future,” said Chon.
