YARMOUTH – Tom Moulton, a well-respected businessman who owned one of Yarmouth’s most successful paving and construction companies, died on Monday after a valiant fight against brain cancer. He was 54.

He owned and operated Tom Moulton Paving & Construction Inc. for the past 25 years. He took on paving jobs for residential and commercial properties across southern Maine.

Tom Pinette, a foreman who worked for Moulton for 15 years, said he was widely respected in the industry. Pinette said he was a hands-on employer who was involved in every aspect of the business.

“While he was undergoing chemo, he would drive to jobs,” Pinette said. “He took a lot of pride in his business. This is the hardest thing I have ever had to deal with. Tom was (like) a father to me. It’s going to be tough to carry on the business without him.”

Mr. Moulton employed about 15 people. Pinette said he is now managing the business with Moulton’s 23-year-old son, Keith Moulton of Freeport.

Mr. Mouton was remembered by his three children this week as a loving father, who devoted his life to them.

In May 2004, he became a single father when his wife of 23 years, Kathleen Moulton, died after an eight-year fight against cancer.

At the time of her death, the Moulton kids were 18, 15 and 11 years old.

Keith Moulton said on Wednesday that his father was a hardworking man who always put his family first.

“I always looked up to him,” his son said. “There were many times that my sisters and I would have something going on, whether it was for sports or just being able to get to a friend’s house, he would always be there for us.”

His daughter, Stephanie Moulton, who’s now 19, remembered the time they spent together driving to the Center for Grieving Children in Portland.

She said they had a very close relationship. He attended most of her basketball and lacrosse games, she said.

“Since I couldn’t have my mom there, it was nice to have his support,” she said. “It’s been really hard with him being sick. I’ll miss his humor.”

His oldest daughter, Darcee Moulton described him Wednesday as a funny, sarcastic and light-hearted guy who made time to help others.

“He was willing to do anything for anyone,” she said. “Whenever I needed help, he was my first thought. He was one of those people you could count on.”

In addition to his children, he leaves France Moulton, his wife of five years. He also had a very close relationship with her two sons, Chad and Shane Perreault.

Mr. Moulton enjoyed spending time at his camp on Kingsbury Pond.

“This was a very big part of his life, as he really enjoyed the peacefulness of the northern Maine woods,” his son said.
