Top photo: Kevin Hawkes, a renowned book illustrator and a Maine resident, worked with students at Longfellow School in Portland on Friday on bringing story ideas to life and making their drawings more interesting.

Bottom photo: First-graders Joseph Miller and Mobean Mohabbati begin a drawing that Hawkes would finish as part of his presentation to the students. Hawkes has illustrated more than 40 books, including “Chicken Cheeks,” “Library Lion” and “Sidewalk Circus.”
