Individuals who become members of the Sanford Springvale Mousam Way Land Trust by May will receive their choice of a new birdhouse, bird feeder or bat house. After-school program grant

Joyful Harvest Neighborhood Center has been awarded a one-year grant totaling $15,000 by United Way of York County. The funds will support Joyful Harvest’s free, after-school drop-in program for ages 7 to 17. The downtown-area program provides youth with access to a safe gathering place to do their homework, find a creative outlet and eat a healthful snack. Tootsie Roll benefit

Members of the Knights of Columbus St. Joseph Council No. 12941 donated $2,600 from their Annual Tootsie Roll Drive to benefit four area outreaches. Creative Work Systems, Stone Soup Pantry, Bon Appetit and Saco Meals Program each received $664.60 in funding.

KENNEBUNK

New community garden

The historic Park Street School will be converted into elderly housing that features a community garden. Avesta Housing, CWS Architects and Wright-Ryan Construction are partnering to restore the long-vacant former school. They will preserve key historic architectural features of the building while installing an addition and modern features for the residents of the proposed 30-unit complex. Lots for the community garden will be available for rent to Kennebunk gardeners, with 25 percent of the produce grown there earmarked for local food pantries. Access to the garden will be through an easement on the Park Street School property, with parking nearby. For more details, call Heather Seymour at 773-3625.

Bakery donation for kids

Wild Oats Bakery and Cafe has donated $1,300 to the Riverview-Brunswick 21st Century Community Learning Center Program. The award-winning after-school program serves economically disadvantaged and academically low-performing students in grades three through eight, offering activities intended to enhance school curricula, especially in the subjects of math and reading. The program is funded by a five-year Department of Education grant in partnership with the Brunswick School Department. For more details, go to www.riverviewfoundation.org

New leader for Peace Fair

Greater Brunswick PeaceWorks has named Stephanie Boucher as its Peace Fair planning team coordinator to help realize the Eighth Annual Peace Fair, set for Aug. 4 at the Brunswick Mall. The event annually celebrates sustainable practices and features performances by local artists, poets, activists and musicians. Boucher brings experience in permaculture design and sustainable living skills, education, DIY music venue hosting and food justice activism to her new role.
