FREEPORT — Tom Wilbur and Catherine Carty-Wilbur, owners of Wilbur’s of Maine Chocolate Confections, were recently presented with the Gowell Award by the New England Retail Confectioners Association (NERCA).

The award, considered the highest honor that can be given to a member of the association, is given every three years in recognition of a member’s contributions to NERCA and the retail confectioner field. According to a news release, the award is named in honor of Richard Gowell, an entrepreneur who was well-known for helping out fellow candy makers and for his belief in the value of NERCA.

Wilbur’s of Maine is a local family-owned candy business that was established in Freeport in 1983. Since that time, the business has grown to include a Freeport chocolate factory, two Freeport retail stores, and a retail store on Maine Street in Brunswick.

The Wilburs, along with their son, Andy, take pride in creating fine chocolate confections for both retail and wholesale markets. For more information, call 865-4071 or go to http://wilburs.gourmetfoodmall.com.
