The winter sports season is over.
The curtain came down Saturday when the Cape Elizabeth and Scarborough boys’ hockey teams both lost in their respective semifinal round games.
The Capers got off to a 4-0-2 start and also enjoyed a five-game win streak this winter, but after finishing 9-6-3, they were relegated to the No. 3 spot in Western B and a semifinal showdown with defending state champion York.
During the regular season, Cape Elizabeth tied the Wildcats on the road, 1-1, and lost to them at home, 4-0. The teams’ last playoff meeting came in last year’s semifinal round (a 5-1 York win).
Saturday, the Capers scored first, courtesy standout Nick Breed, but the Wildcats answered late in the first period.
In the second period, Matt Ross again gave Cape Elizabeth a lead, but York got two goals before the end of the stanza and added one more in the third to end the Capers’ season at 9-7-3 with a 4-2 decision.
The Red Storm, meanwhile, was 12-4-2 in the regular season, finished third in Western A and held off sixth-ranked Biddeford, 3-1, in the quarterfinals.
Saturday, Scarborough traveled to the Colisee in Lewiston to meet No. 2 Falmouth. The teams split in the regular season, both winning at home (the Red Storm, 5-2; and the Yachtsmen, 6-0). Scarborough had taken the previous three playoff meetings, the most recent a 5-1 decision in the 2007 semifinals.
This time, the Red Storm hung tough, but Falmouth had the last laugh.
Jake Gross gave Scarborough a 1-0 lead, but the Yachtsmen scored the next three goals to seemingly take control. Two more tallies from Gross allowed Scarborough to pull even, but Falmouth broke the tie with less than six minutes to play and added an empty netter to win, 5-3, ending the Red Storm’s season at 13-5-2.
