PORTLAND — Portland Police Chief Michael Sauschuck has appointed Commander Vern Malloch to be his assistant chief.

In an announcement to be made today, Sauschuck promoted Malloch from his position in charge of patrol services, to second in command and the person responsible when the chief is out of town. Malloch previously ran the criminal investigations division and community policing teams.

Malloch was a finalist for the chief’s position to which Mark Rees ultimately appointed Sauschuck. Sauschuck was commander before he became assistant chief.
