THE BRUNSWICK RECREATION DEPARTMENT Fifth-Grade Boys Basketball Tournament was held over the weekend, with Brunswick and Ararat competing. BRUNSWICK — Auburn/Lewiston defeated the River Valley Thunder of the Rumford area 46-33 Saturday to win the Brunswick Parks and Recreation Department Fifth-Grade Boys Basketball Tournament.

 

 

Austin Brown paced Auburn/ Lewiston with 17 points, while Ryan Therriault and Caleb Yarnevich added nine each, and Ethan Brown six.

 

 

Auburn/Lewiston led 11-10 after one quarter, but fell behind 21-15 at the half before running into a 35- 27 thirdquarter advantage.

Alex Gorham led River Valley with 16 points, Cameron Godbois had seven, and Keegan Davis five.

At the foul line, A/L was eight of 14 and River Valley nine of 17.

Greely, 50-35

The eight-team tournament got under way Friday with Greely posting quarterly leads of 15-7, 30-23 and 38-32 to beat Ararat.

Mike Coopersmith scored 16 points, while Logan Bagshaw added 13 and Lars Boddie 10 for Greely, which was four of 16 at the line.

In the Ararat effort, Max Spelke had 13 points, Austin Damon and Sean Roberts seven, and Devin Tobin four, while Ben Freeman and Jared Balser also contributed. Ararat was two of 10 at the line.

River Valley, 45-31

Up next in Friday quarterfinal action, was River Valley handling Gardiner, 45-31, with leads of 13-4, 23-14 and 34-24.

Gorham popped in 14 points, Jacob Blanchard 12 and William Sorensen and Davis six each.

At the line, River Valley was three of 20 and Gardiner five of eight.

In the Gardiner effort, Jacob Roy had 10 points and Cam Babcock eight.

Medomak, 33-25

In the night’s third game, Medomak got past Brunswick, despite trailing 12-4 and 14-11 after the first two quarter breaks. The teams were tied at 21 heading into the final period.

Ryan Creamer tossed in 17 points and Chris Bowman added six for the winners, who were four of 11 at the line.

In the Brunswick effort, Noah Cox had 10 points and Aidan Mitchell and Finn Mitchell four each, while Tony Cilea, Nate Girardin and Sam Sharpe chipped in with a basket each.

Brunswick attempted six free throws and made one.

Auburn/Lewiston, 42-23

In the final quarterfinal game on Friday, Ethan Brown scored 11 points and Yarnevich and Austin Brown added eight each to turn back Gray-New Gloucester.

Auburn led 7-6, 22-18 and 34-24 at the breaks and was nine of 20 at the line.

In the G-NG effort, Caleb Carter had nine points, Jon Martin eight and Jake Kakmeister seven. Gray was four of nine at the line.

River Valley, 38-35

In the first semifinal game on Saturday, River Valley defeated Greely with quarterly leads of 10-5, 18-12 and 30-26.

Sorensen led the way with 13 points and Gorham added 10, while River Valley was two of seven at the line.

In the Greely cause, Bagshaw poured in 18 points and Boddie added eight. Greely attempted 23 free throws and made 10.

Auburn/Lewiston, 35-15

In the second semifinal clash, Auburn/Lewiston beat Medomak and rolled to leads of 10-0,19-3 and 25-9 as Austin Brown scored eight, Yarnevich six and Ryan Therriault and Devaunte Rembert five each. A/L was five of 12 at the line.

Creamer scored eight in the loss and Medomak was four of five at the line.

Ararat, 26-7

In the first of two consolation games, Ararat dispatched Gardiner with leads of 6-3, 12-3 and 19-5.

Willy Kavanaugh led Ararat with 10 points, while Hunter Lohr had five and Austin Damon and Spelke four each. Devin Tobin and Hayden Libby also helped out offensively for Ararat, which was four of 17 at the line.

Roy, Leon Whitmore and Isaac Albert each popped in a basket for Gardiner.

Brunswick, 31-21

In the second consolation game, Brunswick beat Gray- New Gloucester. Gray-NG led 5- 2 after one quarter, the teams were tied at 9-9 at the half, and Brunswick slipped into a 20- 14 third- quarter advantage.

Cox paced Brunswick with 10 points, while Aidan Mitchell had five, Connor Shaw, Cilea and Nuri Rosen four each, and Girardin and Sharpe also supplied a basket. Brunswick attempted 13 free throws and made three.

In the G-NG offense, Martin tossed in eight points and Kakmeister added seven and the losers were 10 of 18 at the line.
