CUMBERLAND — More than 100 people from Maine and New Hampshire will present a free concert of handbell music on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at Greely Middle School, 351 Tuttle Road.
The concert is the culmination of the day-long Maine Handbell Festival. During the day, participants meet for rehearsals and take part in workshops on all aspects of playing handbells.
Directors for the concert are Ray Cornils from Brunswick and Monica McGowan from Montana.
The festival is organized by the Parish Ringers of First Parish Church in Brunswick, and the Town Lyne Ringers of Foreside Community Church in Falmouth.
“The art of handbell ringing is a rapidly evolving one. Once used simply to accompany hymns, handbells are now recognized as a multifaceted musical instrument,” states a news release. “ Handbell ringers master complex rhythmic patterns, handle three or more bells, and work as a team to produce both melodic and harmonic lines. A typical handbell ensemble will include four or more members, the maximum being 12 to 13. The dynamic range covered is from three to six octaves.”
